For the past six years Wayoutback Desert Safaris has been attempting to establish an aboriginal component to its tours/safaris so customers can get first hand knowledge and experiences from local Traditional Owners. Negotiations to secure access to private Aboriginal Land in various locations around Central Australia have proved quite a mission. Almost more important than camping on the land was the connection with the various people who are the traditional custodians - sharing their culture and stories and involving them in what was potentially a joint venture. The complexities and politics of the region, together with cultural sensitivities, ensued negotiations were on many occasions too complex and not cost effective.

It is with this background and resolve that Wayoutback Desert Safaris continues to attempt to assimilate Aboriginal Culture into our tours/safaris. At present our latest venture is of a far more simplistic approach. With consistency and reliability of product our ultimate goal, we have selected and trained Aboriginal Hosts from the surrounding regions to join many of our tours/safaris.

At this stage our plan for the next year is to train and employ between 6 - 10 full-time Hosts. The Hosts will join and participate in our various tours and involve themselves in the day to day operation of them - cooking traditional foods by traditional methods and sharing their knowledge of the bush, including the plants and animals that inhabit the land. They will also share cultural stories when applicable to the Host’s own local area. An Arrernte man from the Hermannsburg region west of Alice Springs may or may not be able to share stories on or around Uluru as he is not from that region. However marriage can on occasions change these circumstances and some information may be able to be shared. The Hosts will also talk about themselves, their life stories and experiences. Some of our existing Hosts can also demonstrate spear and boomerang making as well as the use of these items.

Our Ultimate goal with this venture is to eventually employ full time Aboriginal Guides allowing our overseas visitors, and Australians alike, the opportunity to learn the secrets of this beautiful area first hand from the traditional inhabitants of Australia.
